Tis the season. Already?

Well it happened.  On my way to Des Moines last week, as I was driving on the interstate, it happened when I least expected it.  I just couldn’t believe it.  I nearly started crying.  Instead, I took a deep breath, and listened to the first Christmas song of the season.  It popped up, without warning, why I was looking for a country music station.  We are barely into November and there is already an all Christmas music station.

Is it just me, or does the Christmas season start earlier every year?

I remember when we would actually celebrate Thanksgiving before we started thinking about Christmas.  I remember when places would be decorated for Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations appeared the day after.  I remember when Christmas celebrating, planning and decorating started with Advent.

Is it just me, or do retailers want us to start our Christmas shopping in August?

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas.  It is one of my favorite days of the year.  I have so many wonderful memories of celebrating with my family as a child and with my children.  It is a day that reminds me that, thanks to the birth of Jesus, I will see my loved ones again.  It reminds me that God became human, to save a planet of people.

I do love Christmas.  I look forward to the Christmas season.  I am just not ready to start celebrating it already, my calendar shows that there are still 42 days until Dec. 25th.

Dear God,
Every year we celebrate the birth of your Son. Help us to remember that is what Christmas is about. Forgive us when we forget and commercialize the day. We are weak, forgetful and easily distracted; but help us to find you and Jesus in the joy of the season.
