A few weeks ago, Kirby and I were in the car and he was telling me about a situation that he was upset about. We talked about it for awhile, and he said that he just didn’t know what he should do. I asked him:
Will it matter in a week? A month? A year?
We talked about how we sometimes overreact to situations, only to regret it later. When we thought about the long term impact it really had, it completely changed his reaction.
Do you ever react to a situation, only to realize later that time changed your perspective?
There are so many times that we encounter situations that we have no control over. What we do have control over, is our response. So often we can make it better or worse by how we respond. So often we need to measure its impact to gauge our response. Too often we don’t take a breath before we take a stand.
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today I challenge us all to take a slow breath and count to 10 before we respond to a situation where we might get upset.
Today I am asking you to give me patience. I am praying that we all learn to slow down and think before we open our mouths. I am praying that we think carefully before we take a stand. I am praying that you help us all to find peace. Thank you for all you give us. Please continue to guide us to live a life that you would make you proud.
In your name.
